What Is the Florida Drug & Alcohol Course?
TLSAE stands for Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education. It's a 4-hour, state-approved course that teaches new drivers Florida traffic laws and the serious consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
You'll also see it called the Drug & Alcohol Course, DATA course, first-time driver course, or learner's permit course. They all mean the same requirement.
Do I Need the TLSAE Course?
You need it if you've never held a driver's license and you're getting your first Florida:
- Learner's permit (teens starting the licensing process)
- Driver's license (adults getting licensed for the first time)

From TLSAE to Your Florida License
- Take the TLSAE course. Complete the 4-hour class with us. We report your completion to the state electronically.
- Pass the Knowledge Test. Take the Florida permit (written) test at our school.
- Get your learner's permit. Bring your ID documents, plus parental consent if you're under 18.
- Practice driving. Build skills with our one-on-one driving lessons.
- Pass the Road Test. Take your Florida driving skills test at our school, in our car.

Do I get a certificate?
Your completion is reported electronically to the state's system, which is the only record Florida accepts for licensing. You don't need a paper certificate.
Does TLSAE give me my driver's license?
No. It's one requirement. You'll still need to pass the Knowledge Test, meet vision and hearing requirements, provide ID documents, and pass the Road Test when the time comes.
Can I take the permit test at your school?
Yes. We give the Florida Knowledge Test and the Road Test as an authorized Third-Party Administrator.
Is the Drug & Alcohol Course the same as driver's ed?
No. TLSAE covers traffic law and substance abuse. Behind-the-wheel driving lessons are a separate service.
